Project: Fitted Bedroom Storage Furniture
Location: Moretonhampstead, Devon
Towards the final stages of a large renovation project, the clients for this rural retreat found themselves balancing the final wish-list with the practicalities of a stretched budget. What they needed was a storage solution for their loft bedroom that would be both cost-effective and carefully considered, blending seamlessly into the timber-framed architecture of the home.
The answer lay in a hybrid approach: thoughtful sourcing combined with craftsmanship. The internal components (carcasses and drawers) were sourced from IKEA, selected not only for their affordability, but for the flexibility they offer in configuring layouts to suit the practical needs of the space. This helped reduce material and production costs without sacrificing function.
To elevate the overall aesthetic and ensure the wardrobes felt fully at home in the space, all visible joinery, including face frames, drawer fronts, doors, and paneling, was hand-built on site using high-quality softwood. These will be painted once fitting is complete, allowing for a finish that suits the evolving interior palette.
Details like traditional strap hinges and careful alignment give the cabinetry a built-in, crafted feel. Set beneath the gentle arch of exposed beams, the finished wardrobes are both understated and striking.
This project is a quiet testament to the idea that a limited budget need not limit good design. With the right balance of off-the-shelf practicality and hand-finished detail, it’s possible to create something enduring and characterful.
